Pergola Walk Mill. Pergolas come in all shapes, sizes and materials from the traditional wood to contemporary steel, aluminium and Sunbrella fabric. They provide a stylish shady alternative to the usual parasol, the only disadvantage is they cannot be moved around the garden as easily and do take more time to assemble and take down. The wooden pergolas combine with a seat making an ideal hideaway in a sunny corner of the garden; growing sweetly scented climbers and adding some containers of scented plants to give you a secluded calming seating area. Curtain sides are available for the metal structures giving you a bit of privacy and protection from the sun when it drops a bit lower in the sky. They can be fixed to the ground and the solid roofed types can be left up almost permanently, just make sure that they are taken down in strong winds and that snow is not allowed to accumulate on the roof. If you are unsure whether to go for a pergola or a parasol just call our friendly sales team; they won’t give you the hard sell they want you to be completely happy with your purchase. Don’t forget if you live on the mainland UK.

So what’s stopping you?
Yes, these spectacular garden structures can be easy to build, but it’s those niggly little uncertainties, isn’t it – what size of wood to use – how to fix it into the ground – where to find materials – whether to buy a ready-made manufactured pergola kit instead? The list gets longer and longer…
Don’t let these small details put you off. Once you know which size bolts to use and the length of wood you’ll need – or where to find the pergola kit you’re dreaming of – it’s fairly plain sailing. You could easily have one of these gorgeous features in your garden in no time at all.

The free pergola plans will still work for any shape or size, even if the look is significantly different – using thicker wood, making rafter tails longer, changing the shape of the structure and the decorative rafter tail ends, having rafters running in only one direction and closer together, using a raised rafter style, or having rafters sitting fully on top of the supports. There are so many things you can do.

Aluminium is the architectural material of choice for exposed locations throughout the world, eliminating the risk of rusting that comes with steel, the UV degradation common to uPVC and the potential for warping, cracking and rotting when using timber outdoors. Does my Pergola require planning permission?
As a general rule from the 1st October 2008, garden structures (including pergolas) do not require planning permission as long as the following points are followed:-
No structure forward of the principle elevation fronting a highway. Pergola Cockden.
Must be single storey with a maximum eaves height of 2.5mtrs and a total height of less than or equal to 4mtrs for a pitched roof or 3mtrs for any other type of roof.
Within 2mtrs of a boundary the maximum height cannot exceed 2.5mtrs.Pergola Cockden.
Garden structures must have no verandas, balconies or raised platforms.
Where no more than 50% of the existing land around the ‘original house’ is already covered by garden buildings.
Within the curtilage of a listed building planning permission must be sought.
In Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, National Parks, World Heritage Sites, the maximum area to be covered by an outdoor structure, more than 20mtrs from the original house, must be limited to an area not exceeding 10sq mtrs. However, any buildings at the side of the property, within these nominated areas, will require planning permission.
As local authorities may interpret these guidelines in different ways, it is always best to give your Local Planning Office a quick telephone call to discuss what you are intending to do, before you proceed, to ensure that you will meet the regulations for your own particular area.
